This week, Daphne, Fashion Director of the Monocle and a great traveller, entrusts us with her most beautiful address around the world: Shambala. A hippie place, out of time, set on the Turkish coast between Bodrum and Antalya.
‘I like The Shambala because it’s a place in Turkey where the waves are particularly positive. Because it is one of the only places on earth where glaciation did not occur, it seems. I don’t know what it means, but I love crazy owners who leave their hosts to party with their friends, their food, their enclosures and their colour pigments in the middle of an abandoned beach for an indefinite period.
I like that we can sleep in cabanas open to the sea with cats meowing on the roofs and that the choice of beds is varied. From the tent under the pines to the bungalow equipped with air conditioning and a terrace with a view of the sea…
Halfway between the campsite and the kibbutz, it is the most free style, wildest, and most exotic place I can know. There is only the bare essentials here, even if the Turkish owners are very keen on Dream-catchers, leopard prints and other grey-grey prints brought back from their trips around the world very high up. A psychedelic and wild paradise in a corner of the Mediterranean still forgotten by tourists.
